Story Idea: Georgia Education

I know there has been a lot of reporting done on education lately (and that my previous story idea was about education as well), but this issue really concerns me as I have a younger brother still in high school.

As many may know, a large amount of students failed the CRCT tests this year (some as low as 10 points), forcing them to attend summer school in order to continue onto the next grade level.

While it’s normal for a few students to fail the test each year, summer school should not be as crowded as on a regular school day.  When that many students are failing, it’s not a problem with the students, I think, but a problem with the test or policy.  A lot of teachers and students have said that the CRCT tests were changed this year, which caused teachers not to fully prepare their students and take some students by surprise.

Not only would I like to compare the test scores from this year and perhaps a couple of years ago, but if possible, I would like to examine Georgia’s ranking in education compared to other states in the country who do no test their students with something like the CRCT.  In addition, I’d like to see what changes were made to the CRCT this year and find out why those changes were made.  Furthermore, I want to know what the State Department of Education thinks of this new development and what they plan to do to try and fix it.  Finally, I’d like to be able to interview a couple of teachers (from different counties if it’s possible) and students to view their opinions about these tests.
